Camera wars: D80 VS D700

Alternate title: Post-Easter Sugar High - I'm loving all the on-sale post-Easter candy!

Yesterday my  Little Man took a blissfully long early nap and I was able to get some serious photography done. I wanted to compare how my two cameras would behave in identical conditions using the same lens. So I got out some props and some jelly beans (one of my favorite things both to eat and to photograph lately) and had a wonderful time!

What a great post! I hope you are enjoying your new camera. I was inspired by your food photos on Easter, and for the first time attempted my own little white-paper set up:

Still trying to really learn how to use my camera, so hopefully my pictures will get a little better over time. Fun playing around in the meantime! Thanks for your always inspiring photography posts!

You should do more of these. Wouldn't it be nice if camera companies sent you cameras to review for us?

I couldn't see the difference either, but faster shutter speeds are so nice. I'm really happy with my upgrade.

Will you be keeping both cameras? It would be nice to have a back up (I sold my 1st DSLR).

I sent a comment but don't think it went through, so I apologize if this somehow gets posted twice. I love all of the candy pictures and hope you are enjoying your new camera! The faster shutter speeds sound nice.

I have been so inspired by your food shots, that I attempted my own over Easter weekend:

Loved seeing the side by sides. And nice to hear that the quality is about the same even with different features. And omg! I LOVE that heart pic. Great idea!

Faith - I always appreciate your research & advice! I agree Kimberly that they should start sending you stuff to play with so you can report back to us on the results. ;)

Teagan & Kimberly - I would SO love to do more of these types of posts!! I just wish renting cameras were a little bit more affordable.

Very neat and informative post!! I have the NIKON D 40 X and eventually want to upgrade... trying to decide between these two. Would you suggest going right for the D 700? Or will I notice a big difference with the D 80 compared to my D 40 x?

Do you like your d 700 over a camera like this?
Cannon EOS 5D 21 mgp.?
